Elena Odriozola

I can't upload anything at the moment, as I am at home without a scanner. I've been continuing with my character designs in my sketchbook, ready for my hand-in when I get back to Uni in January. My project brief this term has been very broad, but I am fairly sure that I have to include 3 artist studies into my work. Rather than literally copying the work of other artists like I had to last year, I'm looking into the work of some of my favourite artists and illustrators which are all fairly similar to my own style anyway, and using a few aspects of their work as inspiration to develop my own character designs. I've already been studying Edward Gorey, and recently I've been looking at Elena Odriozola because I just love her style.

A few more character development pages in my sketchbook from yesterday. I love how my drawing style is developing throughout my sketchbooks this term, especially the over-sized and elongated faces, I'm excited to continue establishing my style over the Christmas holidays (today was the last day of term!)

I really love these two pages of people watching, I used my usual watercolours, but it is the first time I've used so much colour for quick sketches and I am so pleased with the outcome.

Here are a few more pages of people watching from the weekend.

Friday, 29 November 2013

Here are a few pages from my sketchbook this week- lots more people watching, I find it so interesting to study people and how they act, and it's a perfect starting point for my character designs.

Monday, 25 November 2013

I'm not sure why these have scanned so badly, but here are a few recent pages from my sketchbook. I've been continuing to look at Edward Gorey as inspiration for my character design Artist Study project- I've used Gorey's muted colours in these first two pages, which I really love.

An update

Here are a few things I've been doing recently- a bit of research into bullfighting arenas for the film, some drawings from another day of working in Starbucks, and some life drawing from last Tuesday. I've been super busy lately so haven't had time to update as much as usual, and I've started animating my baseball project so not much to show on here until that's finished in 2 weeks' time (hopefully!!)

Friday, 8 November 2013

I've been trying to start doing more work digitally, and so today I drew a few facial expressions of my ballerina character on Photoshop, using my Wacom tablet.
I've finally updated my portfolio! ameliaflowerportfolio.wordpress.com

People Watching

Yesterday, I spent my day in Starbucks drawing people as inspiration for some new character designs (making use of the free refills on filter coffee!) People watching is one of my favourite things to do. I've always been fairly observant and so I find it so interesting to study how people act. Starbucks was surprisingly busy all day, so there were all sorts of different people to draw. At the end of the day, I started drawing one girl in the queue who was perfect to start developing into a character, and so I've started drawing some ideas based on this today!

Life Drawing

We had a female model in life drawing today which was nice because I find women so much nicer to draw. I am pleased with my drawings from today, and I briefly tried out some Edward Gorey-esque line drawing, from my previous post!

I also started a few silhouettes of some new character designs. I'm not too sure of who my character will be at the moment, but I find it relaxing drawing these so I did these quickly on my lunch break today.

Inspiration

I love love love Edward Gorey, and so I've decided to study his work in a bit more detail as inspiration for a new project. I find monochrome pen and ink so interesting, and I'm always drawn to anything surreal or a bit dark, and so obviously Edward Gorey is one of my favourite influences.
I've been mainly studying Gorey's use of lines, and I'm excited to use some new techniques in my character designs.

Here are a few sketchbook pages from today, still working on my character designs and the 3rd Year film that I'm helping with, as well as my group project, and I've been trying to get started on my essay too...SO MUCH TO DO!

Tuesday, 29 October 2013

Today was the second half of the character design workshop. I still need to continue developing my character and draw a turn-around of her, but so far I'm really pleased with how she looks.

Ballerina

Here are my sketchbook pages from the Character Design workshop. I decided to draw an overweight ballerina- I'm still just trying out different silhouettes and poses, but so far I love her chunky, masculine shape, and her massive bottom half in the final two pages!

A very productive day!

Today at Uni we had life drawing in the morning, as usual, and then a Character Design workshop in the afternoon which was SO MUCH FUN. It was run by Gillian Reid, a freelance character designer, and she showed us her process of designing and developing characters. I'm really keen to develop my character designs this term, and it was really interesting to see the whole process, and Gillian's work is absolutely amazing. I'm feeling very inspired! I didn't have time to scan my sketchbook pages from the workshop today, and so I'll blog them tomorrow.

Here are a few of my life drawings from this morning. We only had 1 hour in the life room, and so I don't feel like I drew anything that I'm particularly pleased with.
Yesterday, I drew a few character designs of a bull for the 3rd Year film that I am assisting on. I'm really pleased with these, and they were so fun to draw.
Whilst I was waiting for life drawing to start this morning, I doodled this page of strange little characters.
